Common rectangular windows sound like they’d be the easiest ones to measure – and that’s because they are, relative to other specialty windows. But there’s still an entire process to follow to find your measurements. Here’s the process.

What You’ll Need:

• Tape measure

• Pen and paper

First, measure the width (the horizontal distance). Measure across in three separate spots: near the middle, near the top, and close to the bottom of the window. Write down all three, to the nearest ⅛ of an inch. After that, do the same for the length (vertical) – get three measurements, one in the center, and one near either edge of your window as shown in the diagram below.

Why do you need to measure three times each? Simply because no window is a truly perfect square. And because of the different types of shutter mounts different windows need, you might either need to record the smallest measurement (for an inside mount), or the absolute largest measurement (outside mount). Taking measurements in three places makes sure you’re covered for every options.

How to Measure Unique Shape Windows for Shutters

Windows that aren’t rectangular are where measuring can become extremely tricky. Just like there’s no perfect square window, there’s no such thing as a perfect arch or octagonal window – which means that taking the right measurements can be problematic. Measuring Arch Windows and Round Windows for Shutters

Start by measuring the width of the window at the flat bottom. Measuring only the window opening, record to the closest ⅛ of an inch the width of the arch. Moving on to the length, look for the halfway point of the window by dividing the width distance in two, then measure to the top of the window from the point you found. Again, record to the closest ⅛ of an inch.

How to Measure Elongated Arch Windows

Elongated arch windows are almost like a cross between a circular or rectangular, with a flat, wide bottom and straight “legs,” but with rounded top edges and a higher arch. So think of it exactly as that: an arch and a rectangle put together. Get the width measurement like you would any other arch, then measure the height of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). After that, measure the window’s maximum height from the middle of the width, minus the leg height. Again, record all of these to the closest ⅛ of an inch.

How to Measure Circular & Octagonal Windows

Octagonal and circular windows are some of the trickiest to find measurements, as there are so many small imperfections that can change the shutter dimensions you might need. We strongly recommend leaving these windows to professionals.
