Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Virginia Beach

March 02, 2020

While there are plenty of faux wood plantation shutters on the market in Virginia Beach, they are not all the same.  While some faux wood coverings will last virtually forever without warping, cracking, or yellowing, other faux wood treatments will start to degrade in just a few years.

It may be tough to understand the pros and cons of the different faux wood plantation shutters Virginia Beach.  But as you learn about the different types of faux wood, it will be much easier to see which interior shutter will always look great.

The following list examines the different types of faux wood shutters in Virginia Beach and orders them from the least durable to the most durable and stylish:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some plantation shutters that use vinyl present themselves as faux wood.  But don’t fall for it, vinyl is not faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick coating can be difficult to blend with a your decor, unlike other faux wood or real wood-based shutters.  These treatments may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products available, but that’s because they don’t last very long.

Vinyl can also be affected by heat. It’s not uncommon to see vinyl shutters melt or fade due to extensive exposure to the sun. Because of their tendency of warping or splitting and their poor insular nature, vinyl shutters won’t provide much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the shutter uses hollow shutters.

  • Benefits:

    Cheapest of the non-wood shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Appears plastic; thin construction; hollow louvers; low energy efficiency; will often warp, chip or discolor.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

A step up from vinyl shutters are wrapped plantation shutters.  These coverings are comprised of pressed wood, wood chip components, or glued MDF, and then wrapped with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The shutters feel more substantial and can appear much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their hollow louvered alternatives.

Unfortunately, synthetic wrapped shutters have many drawbacks. The pressed material under the covering can be extremely porous, leaving the treatment to be sensitive to humidity and moisture. It’s a common occurance to find a warped or splintered louver or find that the vinyl wrapping has chipped or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters aren’t custom-fitted for specialty shaped windows like arches or octagons.

  • Benefits:

More substantial than vinyl shutters; might resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not suitable for high humidity or high moisture areas. Will take in moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; outer layer can chip away; warps or splinters easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters constructed from solid extruded faux wood are more durable than all of the other faux wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic fibers permeate throughout the window treatment, they form more substantial, solid louvers that are more resistant warping.  You will also see that these shutters last longer on average and will function much more like basswood plantation shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters also can be custom-fitted to fit every window shape and size -- even ovals.

But a solid extruded window treatment is only as durable as its faux wood formula.  Some recipes create a brittle treatment, which can be cracked or chipped during installation. If the faux wood doesn’t include a UV inhibitor, then the shutter will fade and yellow over time. Some companies need to paint their louvers, which also invite chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More durable treatment that compares favorably to a hardwood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the mixture of the faux wood composite.
