4 Shutter Myths Revealed

April 03, 2017

We spend a lot of time speaking with residents about shutters in Virginia Beach.

And though it may be surprising, when we talk with people around VA Beach, we hear a few shutter myths floating around. We want to spend a few moments to dispel some common myths about plantation shutters so that you’re able to make the perfect choice for your space when it comes time for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to DIY

Several home design projects can easily be done by yourself in a single weekend. Installing shutters probably isn’t one of them, though.

Putting in new shutters can be difficult from the beginning, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows have to be extremely precise to ensure an easy and tight fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, lifting large shutters and installing them level might present a rough task. Unless each part of the process is done exactly right, you may end up with uneven shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Make Houses Look Dim

New home designers might shy away from shutters, believing shutters will make houses look dark or dim. This myth most likely stems from being unfamiliar with interior shutters.

Think about this: light from the sun always comes into your home from an angle. Shutters let you modify that angle by adjusting their louvers, offering you more control over amount of light that comes in. And don’t forget, shutters can still swing open all the way to allow all the light you could need.

Myth: Shutters Are Too Expensive

It’s true that shutters aren’t as cheap as discount rack blinds from a big box store. But this myth has to do with how you’re thinking about shutters. If you’re thinking them as just a basic decoration that you don’t expect to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters can be a tad expensive. But shutters are a permanent part of your house, and have several benefits: shutters are energy efficient and are proven to lower heat and air conditioning bills, they can increase your home value, and shutters are able to last generations, unlike blinds–which will need to be replaced repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Only Work In Older Homes

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it certainly isn’t accurate. While shutters were typical for older home styles throughout the years, their straight, clean lines and neutral tones let them fit in just as well with more chic, up-to-date designs. Interior shutters are the ultimate in versatile window treatments.
